Paying for Your Care

Trillium Midwifery Services tries to make services affordable for all families. We offer flexible payment schedules and accept cash, check, credit/debit card, or insurance billing through a third-party insurance billing service. Health Savings Accounts may be used to cover the costs of an out-of-hospital birth, as do ministry-based health share plans. We can discuss all financial details of care at a free consultation visit.

Trillium Midwifery Services will be paid in full, even if the birth is missed due to events such as a fast birth or as a result of the birth team receiving delayed notification to come for the upcoming birth. No refund will be given in these cases.

Processing fees of 3% are applied to all credit/debit card transactions.

Insurance

Trillium works with an independent insurance billing company, Lyons Medical Billing, LLC, that specializes in submitting insurance claims for reimbursement of out-of-hospital midwifery and home birth services. All services are generally out-of-network. If you choose to have claims submitted, you are still required to pay Trillium the your entire Maternity Care Package fee in full by 36 weeks of pregnancy. Please refer to Lyons Medical Billing website for related fees.

Billing through our billing company is optional and for your convenience. You can submit claims yourself if you are comfortable. If you file yourself, fees and/or deposits are due as outlined above. After the birth you will be provided a billing statement to turn in to your insurance company.

Most of the time, insurance payments may be paid directly to you from your insurance company. If you choose to submit to insurance, please be aware that the amount submitted to insurance will reflect the cost of all services rendered, and may be more than your deposit amount. Any insurance payments received are to be surrendered to Trillium. After all insurance claims are filed and processed, any overpayment for care received will be refunded to the client.

Verification of Benefits

For families with private insurance only!

Completing a Verification of Benefits with our billing company will allow them to contact your insurance, verify your covered benefits as well as your deductibles and other accumulations, and request any prior authorizations that may be needed for your birth. They will also inquire about an "In Network Exception" which is where the insurance company agrees to process the claims using your in network benefits even if you are using an out-of-network provider if they do not have an in network home birth midwife in your area. There is a nominal fee for this service payable directly to the billing company. This fee does not apply to your global Midwifery Care Package fee. Please allow up to 14 business days for a response.

Wisconsin Medicaid / Badger Care

Wisconsin Licensed Midwives (LMs) are able to bill Wisconsin Medicaid for out-of-hospital birth services. Medicaid covers the majority of the services provided by Trillium Midwifery Services but not all. There is an out-of-pocket fee for birth related services that Medicaid does not cover. If you have Wisconsin Medicaid, please discuss billing with the midwives to determine your responsibility for payment.

Financing Options Available

For those that need other alternatives to assist them with paying for their care, we do offer financing options through a third party.

Transfer of Care

The Midwifery Care Package fee will remain the same if Trillium Midwifery Services and/or client decides to transfer your care to a doctor/hospital any time after 36 weeks of pregnancy, at some point during labor, or in the postpartum. If this occurs, one member of Trillium staff will continue to offer support and remain with you in the hospital, as permitted. Postpartum care may continue with us following our same schedule after your discharge. This support and advocacy at the hospital can be very valuable. Having an experienced midwife involved, with whom you have developed a prior relationship, may make the experience much more congenial.

If you are referred to another care provider or discontinue care at any time prior to 36 weeks, you will receive an itemized invoice of accrued expenses and any over-payment of services will be refunded.

Late to Care

We do not adjust or reduce our deposit amount based on gestational age at entrance into our care or amount of care received from another provider prior to the start of care with Trillium Midwifery Services.
